My 15 yr old daughter went from 107lbs to 94lbs, newly diagnosed with Crohns and anemic from blood loss for over a month now. She had a cold during xmas time and towards the end of her cold she got diarrhea. Shes not one to miss school or sports so she asked for Immodium and went on her way. Immodium wasnt helping her at all, but she still dealt with it as to not miss school or practices. One day early Jan, she asked me if it was normal to see blood when you go "#2"? I said no way and not to flush next time so I could see how much blood she meant.Well.... it looked like something was murdered in the bowl. I took her to our Dr and she put her on antibiotics right away and ordered a stool test. She thought it was bacterial. Well that came up negative. She sent us to a pediatric GI the next day and he said he wanted to do a colonoscopy in a week from then. When we got home, I called an old GI friend and he said bring her to the hospital right this minute (no prep), we have to do the procedure RIGHT NOW! He said the symptoms called for an emergency.Long story shortened, he treated her for 3 weeks with Lialda, Metronidazole and iron and didn't see much of an improvement, just less blood loss. He referred us to a Pediatric GI he knows in NYC and she took us the next day. (even though the soonest appt they had was in April.) It pays to know someone. I don't know where you live, but this woman IS EXCELLENT. We still have alot of questions and alot of recovery, but I guess we are on the right road. She is an awesome softball and basketball player, and this illness came right during basketball season and ended up with her on the bench. (if she even made it to games)She was on the road to getting sports scholarships and we are both worried how this disease will affect her athletic future.
