Overwhelmed by Medical Bills

Wed, March 27, 2024 9:30 AM

I was diagnosed with UC in 2018. Since then, I've had at least one severe flare-up every year. Lab work alone costs about $600 out of pocket every time I flare up. On top of that is regular colonoscopies, emergency room visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, etc. I have BCBS through my job, which should be good health insurance, right?? I've called them in the past to ask them to explain the breakdown of benefits but their response is usually that the labwork and procedures aren't considered "medically necessary" which is why hardly any of it is actually covered.

I guess I'm just so overwhelmed by how much it costs to have a chronic disease. Anyone else struggling with this? Is there anything I can do to lessen the burden of medical bills?
