Crohn's and Medical Marijuana

Tue, August 01, 2017 1:49 PM

I just wanted to share my experience with medical marijuana and Crohn's Disease because I think it could help a lot of people.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease back in 2010 when I was 16 years old. I was in the hospital for a week, and I was in the worst pain of my life! I left the hospital with prednisone, asacol, and 6MP (can't remember the name exactly). I was taking all of these NASTY medicines with TERRIBLE side effects, I was becoming more and more depressed, which led to drinking, and we all know that's definitely not okay when you have Crohn's Disease. I was literally miserable, I thought my life was over, because my Grandma and Dad have had ulcerative colitis for as long as I can remember. I watched them struggle every day of my life, even with their medications. Never ending trips to the bathroom, not being able to go anywhere without worrying about where there's a bathroom or even having an accident (having to wear adult diapers), and that was IF I would ever even leave my house again. All I wanted was to be a normal teenager. When I turned 18, I started smoking marijuana, not necessarily knowing that there was any link or study that had been done between that and Crohn's Disease.

I'm now 23 years old, and I haven't taken any sort of medication since I was 18 years old. It's been in remission since. I can eat whatever I want with no issues, I actually have solid stools. (However, I have been eating healthier because of the thought of the possible long term effects.) I stopped smoking for a week, and that's when I noticed that my symptoms were starting to come back. I remember talking to this older couple a few months ago, and they were talking about their nephew who had Crohn's. They were extremely against all of the pharmaceuticals that he was given because, unfortunately, they took his life.

I still live a completely active lifestyle, exercising and doing activities with my children. I currently attend college with straight A's. So it's not like me smoking marijuana makes me any dumber or lazier (I know some people have a negative view on marijuana). It really has helped me live a normal life, and I couldn't be happier.

I suggest it for people who have tried everything and still struggle with unbearable pain and constant trips to the bathroom, so long as you're comfortable with it. You can also eat it or use a vaporizer so you don't have to smoke it.

Has anyone else had a positive or negative experience using medicinal marijuana for their Crohn's Disease?

CBD is legal in all 50 states and its a hemp based oil not a cannabis based oil. I would give the capsules a try and see how they do with inflammation.

Thank you for sharing!  I am considering taking a trip to Colorado to visit a MD or ND with knowledge and experience in this.  Is there a specific type of marijuana you use?  Does it matter? I don't like to feel high and I am currently in school myself, so do you know of options to get the same benefits without the high?

Thanks for any help!

I have my card but all I've tried so far is the CBD oil with a low percent of THC 20:1, have you tried CBD oil? If so do you feel like it helps?

Not legal in my state but us patients are trying to get it on the ballot. Yes, there are many success stories like yours and I'm happy you live a normal life. This disease is so ugly, it gives me hope when one of us conquers it. The only suggestion I have it the oil is safer than smoking.
